When faculty submit F grades, they must report if the grade is a True F or document the Last
Date of Attendance (LDA). The LDA is equivalent to Academic Engagement.
True F grades apply to students who complete the course but earn the grade of F.
LDA grades apply to students who stop engaging in the course (stop attending, submitting work,
communicating about content, etc.). The recorded LDA is the date that the student last engaged
academically in the course.
Faculty may be asked to provide supportive documentation of LDA grades if required by outside
entities.
Defining Academic Engagement (DOE
definition)
Academic engagement: Active participation by a student in an instructional activity related to the student's course of study that—Includes, but is not limited to:
- Attending a synchronous class, lecture, recitation, or field or laboratory activity, physically or online, where there is an opportunity for interaction between the
instructor and students; - Submitting an academic assignment;
- Taking an assessment or an exam;
- Participating in an interactive tutorial, webinar, or other interactive computer-assisted instruction;
- Participating in a study group, group project, or an online discussion that is assigned by the institution; or
- Interacting with an instructor about academic matters
Do not include activities where a student may be present, but not academically engaged, such as—
- Living in institutional housing;
- Participating in the institution's meal plan;
- Logging into an online class without active participation; or
- Participating in academic counseling or advisement.
Resources to help faculty record
Academic Engagement
To help you identify when a student last participated in an Academic Engagement , please use the
following resources:
Attendance activity/Participants Roster in Moodle
To access your roster in Moodle:
- Go to Brescia's Moodle
- Enter your firstname.lastname@brescia.edu as your username and enter your password.
- Then click login.
- Your courses will appear on the upper left-hand side of the page under the “My Courses” tab.
- Select the course you are wanting to access.
- Review the Attendance Activity
All instructors can view “All logs” or complete reports of each student’s Moodle activity in each
course. This provides a description of the student’s activity with assignments, quizzes, discussion
boards, URLs, etc. Viewing online courses or assignments is not engagement-keep this in mind.
To view “All logs”, follow these steps:
- Go to the Moodle home page of your course.
- Click on “Participants” on the left hand side:
- Click on the student’s name from the list of participants.
- You should see a “Reports” heading about half way down the screen.
- Click on the “All logs” option under the “Reports” heading:
- You will then see a report that gives you the following information: Time, User Full Name, Affected User, Event Context (this is typically the course name or assignment name), Component (assignment, file, user report/grader report), Event name (action taken-viewed syllabus, viewed grader report, submitted, etc,), and a Description.
Instructors should check their email to know if the student has inquired about the academic
subject studied in the course.
Use only the definition of engagement to determine the LDA-not “viewing” an activity or course
page.
